Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, ME
Official website: Acadia National Park
I've been to Acadia NP multiple times. The September roadtrip in 2016 was the latest and freshest in my mind. This is the only National Park in the Northeast, and by that I mean a US Congress approved National Park (there is a difference between such parks and parks managed by the National Park Service which some may also refer to as "national parks"). Acadia NP was originally established as Sieur de Monts National Monument in 1916. There is still a Sieur de Monts section of Acadia, often referred to as the "Heart of Acadia", which includes Sieur de Monts Spring and spring house, nature center, wild gardens of Acadia, Abbe Museum and the Great Meadow Wetland. It's the first major stopping point along the Park Loop Road.
We visited Acadia for just one day and walked the dogs around Jordan Pond. They loved it and fortunately they were young enough to have the energy to walk the whole 3.2 mile loop. But they were very tired when we got back to the cabin!
